Royal Enfield has recalled the Himalayan Adventure Tourer in the US due to a possible brake issue. The manufacturer has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of 4,891 Royal Enfield Himalayans produced between March 1, 2017, and February 28, 2021. These examples may suffer from poor braking performance or a complete loss of braking, according to the company. Note that the recall does not cover Himalayan models sold in India.

Royal Enfield said in its notice that the brake calipers could corrode due to the salt used to treat roads in winter. This can result in “reduction or complete loss of braking function”. Owners will need to thoroughly clean each brake caliper after exposure to avoid corrosion. The potential defect could cause unusual or increased brake noise when braking, the company said. It can also lead to a burnt smell near the calipers, and the bike has a dragging feel when you try to accelerate, and the Himalaya can also have difficulty pushing manually.

Royal Enfield’s brake component suppliers Bosch (for the ABS) and Brembo (for the calipers) helped deduce the problem, with Brembo recommending anodized calipers to combat corrosion. The manufacturer has only received feedback about the potential problem in the UK, but has decided to expand the recall in the US and other markets, including Europe and South Korea, where salt is used to clear ice from roads in winter. According to the notice, the recall will be expanded to Europe, the UK, South Korea and Japan.

As part of the remedy, dealers will replace the front and rear brake calipers on the recalled Himalaya models at no cost. If you are a Royal Enfield Himalayan owner in the United States, you are advised to check with your local dealer regarding the voluntary recall (Recall Number – SC-28). With spring on the horizon, more riders are looking to address this issue before hitting the road again.
