KTM has officially released the 2023 890 SMT in the global market. The manufacturer calls it the “Supermoto Tourer”. This isn’t the first time KTM has used SMT in their lineup, they used to have a product called the 990 SMT which was introduced in 2009 and discontinued in 2013. The 2023 KTM 890 SMT is based on the 890 Adventure R, so it shares some underpinnings with it. The 890 SMT is not expected to enter the Indian market anytime soon.
The 890 SMT is basically an adventure touring bike with wide handlebars, roomy seat, long-travel suspension and 17-inch wheels. By comparison, the 890 Adventure R has a 21-inch unit at the front and an 18-inch unit at the rear.
Powering the KTM 890 SMT is the latest iteration of the LC8 engine. The 890 cc parallel twin engine puts out 105 hp at 8,000 rpm and 100 Nm of peak torque at 6,500 rpm. KTM redesigned the airbox and made it compact. The duty transmission is a 6-speed unit.
The KTM 890 SMT is also equipped with Supermoto ABS.
The powder-coated chrome-molybdenum steel frame uses the engine as the stressed element. It is suspended by WP Apex 43mm suspension up front and a WP Apex Monoshock in the rear. Both suspension units have 180mm of travel. Braking duties are performed by twin 320mm discs at the front and twin radially mounted 4-piston calipers. At the rear, there is a 260mm disc and a 2-piston caliper.

The KTM 890 SMT has a dry weight of 194kg and a ground clearance of 227mm. The motorcycle is also equipped with high-end steering dampers and a 15.8-litre fuel tank that provides a range of approximately 300 kilometers. The instrument cluster is a 5-inch TFT unit compatible with the KTM Connect app so it can display turn-by-turn navigation. The 890 SMT also features riding modes, ABS and traction control. There are also optional extras such as Quickshifter+ and cruise control, which are activated for the first 1,500km.
