Bajaj Auto announced on Monday that sales of two-wheelers fell 23 percent to 247,024 units in December from 318,769 units in the same month last year. This sales figure includes domestic and international retail sales. In the Indian market, the automaker’s sales fell 2% last month, with retail sales of 125,525 units compared to December 2021 sales of 127,593 units.
In overseas markets, the homegrown two-wheeler main shipped 121,499 units in December 2022, down 36% from 191,176 units in the same period last year.

For the current financial year, Bajaj Auto claims to have sold 27,17,239 units between April 2022 and December 2022. This is down 9% from 19,77,765 units in the same period of the previous financial year. However, the automaker posted sales figures showing that its domestic sales rose 7 percent in the first nine months of the financial year. It sold 13,90,698 units during April-December last year, while it sold 13,01,984 two-wheelers in the domestic market during April-December 2021.
The two-wheeler maker’s overseas sales fell 21% between April and December 2022. It sold 13,26,541 units in the first nine months of the current financial year, compared with 16,75,781 units sold in the same period of the previous financial year.
Overall, 2022 is a bumpy road for Bajaj Auto. Domestic demand for two-wheelers remained weak throughout the year, with subdued demand in rural markets contributing the most to sales of two-wheelers, especially in the low-engine category. While a strong export market was a boon for the automaker in the first half of 2022, lower export volumes in the second half of FY22 despite a weaker domestic market weighed on the automaker’s overall retail performance.
