Big character trumps big money: Rolls-Royce screens buyers for its Specter EV

Just having a multi-million dollar bank account doesn’t guarantee one can drive home a uber-exclusive Rolls-Royce Wraith. The makers of some of the most exclusive and expensive cars in the world are now preparing to blacklist customers who buy Specters and then resell them at a profit.

The Rolls-Royce Specter EV has the hallmarks of the Wraith, with a slim front grille flanked by split headlight units.

Billed as the world’s first “ultra-luxury electric super coupe”, the Rolls-Royce Specter is in a class of its own. While every Rolls-Royce model is a symbol of opulence and indulgence, the world’s richest are seeking the first all-electric Rolls-Royce, but not everyone sees it as their prized possession garage.

Production of the Rolls-Royce Specter is extremely limited, so not everyone with money can drive home one. There were indications that some people might resell their purchases at a premium above the initial purchase cost, so the company decided to blacklist any customers who chose to resell. Torsten Muller-Otvos said: “I can tell you that we are really removing the need to prove who you are and what you want to do with the car – you need to be qualified Get a car and then you might get an order,” said chief executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd. He was speaking to members of the media at an event in California.

Muller-Otvos made it clear that if someone who is “chosen” to buy a Specter subsequently resells the vehicle, he or she will be barred from buying it again.

Despite paying nearly half a million dollars for a Rolls-Royce Specter, customers are warned not to resell it, which seems pretty harsh. But as the British ultra-luxury brand grows, the field of competition is extremely high.

The Rolls-Royce Specter is a car of absolute luxury, and while its zero-emissions credentials should stand out in itself, there are other gleaming touches that put it several notches above any car in its class. Specter uses a dual-motor electric powertrain that can provide 577 horsepower and 900 Nm of torque, and the electric vehicle can accelerate from 0 km/h to 100 km/h in about 4.2 seconds. But sprinting isn’t something it does very often, and it can run a marathon of 455 kilometers per charge.

The Wraith is equipped with suicide doors—doors that hinge at the rear instead of the front, split headlights, vertical taillights, a wide roofline, and more. Inside the cabin, this particular Rolls-Royce kicks things up a few notches with ultra-luxurious seating, a premium interior, and plenty of customization options.
