The project will use Cellexcel’s patented technology, Cellexcellent™, to enhance the water resistance of biomaterials in Retrac’s existing bio-composite panels, enabling them to be used in exterior vehicle applications while reducing weight and embedded CO2 emissions. This expands the potential uses of biocomposites — because they naturally absorb moisture, biomaterials typically decay, limiting their previous use to internal applications.

The resulting panels will undergo a comprehensive testing program that will enable Retrac to evaluate the technology in production applications and deliver new advanced material structures to its customer base.Reduce CO2 in manufacturing and operations by using biomaterials instead of high-emission alternatives such as fiberglass, potentially reducing weight to increase vehicle payload and range2 emissions.

“Working with our strategic industry partner, Retrac, this project moves our technology from the lab to a real production environment,” said Tim Pryce, Executive Chairman of Cellexcel. “We will gain important knowledge to fully commercialize our innovative waterproofing technology in biomaterial composites, accelerating its wider application and thus helping to reduce embedded CO22 Delivering lighter, higher-performance vehicles at the same time. “

Retrac Composites, part of the Retrac Group, is an emerging market leader in efficient, lightweight composite solutions and powertrain hardware for engineered solutions in transportation and highly engineered applications. It advises original equipment manufacturers in the commercial transportation sector on lightweighting strategies and composite manufacturing capabilities, especially for low-carbon and electric vehicles.

“Retrac is a trusted supplier to some of the biggest brands in the automotive, aerospace and motorsports sectors,” said Dan Walmsley, CEO of Retrac Group. “As these industries shift to relying on more sustainable lightweight solutions, Retrac has positioned itself at the forefront of knowledge and technology for the successful application of natural fibers and recycled composites. Signing an evaluation license to explore this exciting technology will expand our experience and helps us innovate to meet changing customer needs.”

The evaluation permit project is currently underway and is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2023.

About Cellexcel
Cellexcel’s technology is designed to increase the adoption of biomaterials, reduce carbon emissions and improve sustainability. To achieve this, it has developed a unique solution to chemically modify the properties of biomaterials, leading to higher water resistance for the first time application. This enables biocomposites to be used in exterior applications, such as outer panels for cars, trucks, vans or aircraft, significantly reducing their carbon footprint without compromising strength or other properties.
