Students at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) on Monday unveiled the institute’s first Formula E race car, as they aim to develop real-world technical expertise among engineering students. The formula car ‘RF23’ was built entirely by the students of ‘Team Raftar’ and is the result of a year-long process of design, manufacturing and testing by the team, according to an IIT Madras press release.
In terms of performance, students expect to see significant improvements in speed and lap times over earlier combustion-engined models, given the higher power offered by the electric drive. Team Raftar, comprising 45 students from various disciplines, is one of the competition teams at the Center for Innovation (CFI), IIT Madras. “The team looks forward to representing India at an international level, fostering industry-standard engineering practices and developing practical technical expertise among engineering students.”
Prof. V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras said after the launch of “RF23”, “The shift from combustion vehicles to electric vehicles is necessary in line with the global trend towards sustainable transportation. As the global electric vehicle industry is still in its infancy, There is huge potential for growth and technological advancement in this area.” Team Raftar aims to be the best Formula student team in the world. It intends to promote the formula student culture in the country through continuous innovation and sustainable technological advancement. “As a Formula Student team, Raftar exclusively designs, builds and drives high-performance racing cars that compete each year in Formula Student competitions against top engineering institutions around the world.”
