Cape Town/London – November 17, 2017size dataThe $8 billion global provider of ICT solutions and services today launched its health and wellness mobile app at the annual training camp for professional cycling teams in Africa, Qhubeka’s team dimension data. Known as Phila (pee-lah), which means “life” Ngunithe application was custom designed according to the specific requirements of Team Dimension Data.

The app tracks the daily physical and mental performance of the team’s 39 World Tour and Continental riders located in 10 countries. Data collected from the team included geographic location and time zone, sleep quality and quantity, response to training, muscle soreness, and mood, motivation and stress levels.

Developed by Dimension Data’s Digital Practice in collaboration with Team Dimension Data’s drivers and MIK Health in Australia, Phila is also the team’s communication and data sharing management tool.

Every day, Phila prompts riders to complete assessments via their mobile devices. This information is correlated with existing training data captured by the team training peak app and is used to monitor training performance and overall fitness.

“Crucially, we designed an app that is easy to use 365 days a year, where riders can upload their assessment responses in two to three minutes,” explains Dr. Carol Austin, Director of Sports and Medical at Team Dimension Data . “Our goal is to minimize problems, but extract as much data as possible to identify anything that could jeopardize a rider’s ability to train – even weather conditions and equipment issues.”

In addition to the fact that riders are geographically distributed, they are often in different race, training and rest cycles. Riders, coaches, doctors, and show crews struggle to maintain constant communication. Phila is an easy way to capture key information and share it with team support staff, who can immediately respond to injury or illness and adjust driver race and training plans. “

Scott Gibson, Group Executive – Digital Practice, Dimension Data, said: “Health apps are just one component of the key data collection mechanism that we will feed into the analytics platform we have built for Team Dimension Data. Data sets are enhanced and machine learning solutions and predictive analytics are implemented to improve team planning and management performance.”

Dimension Data is the title sponsor of Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka. However, Gibson said sponsorships are more than just a financial investment in the team. “Just as we believe technology in the new digital age will help our clients achieve business outcomes, our aim is to develop digital technologies that will help Team Dimension Data achieve their 2020 vision of winning the Tour de France.

More on fitness data collected from Team Dimension Data’s riders
each rider’s position: The country and continent where the rider is racing or training.

travel: Performance management for teams requires an understanding of the impact of travel on a rider’s health and performance, such as the impact that traveling across time zones may have on a rider.

sleep: Collect data on whether the rider slept at home, in a hotel, on a plane, etc.; and where he slept the night before; when the rider fell asleep and woke up, how long the rider slept; sleep quality; and the altitude at which the rider slept and woke up Height, which is very important on a scientific level.

general health:Using a scientifically validated and easy-to-answer scale, riders are asked to rate their daily mood level, their motivation and current stress level, if they are fatigued or have muscle soreness.

train: Riders are asked to provide a subjective opinion on their performance in the previous day’s training or race: Did they perform as expected? What really matters with this data is how the rider feels about his training: what is his rating on perceived movement? Did the rider respond well to the training prescribed by the coach? Does the effort feel like 7/10, 5/10, or 9/10?

manage: Was the rider able to train that day, and if the answer was no, was it the weather? Is he sick or injured? Or is there something else going on, like the bike failing? Even works on nasal congestion. Although the nasal congestion may not seem serious, in the past riders ignored the nasal congestion, and it turned into pneumonia.
