GM appears to be taking the same route as Tesla with its future in-car infotainment system, which will be available in the brand’s upcoming electric vehicles. The US auto giant has teamed up with Google to develop an all-new infotainment system that will be used in the automaker’s future electric vehicles. According to Automotive News, the technology will bypass popular car connectivity features developed by Google and Apple, namely Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Only a handful of automakers in the world are considering bypassing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in favor of entirely new infotainment systems in their cars. Tesla and Rivian are among them. The decision was never popular with car owners, but apparently it wasn’t enough to force them to buy EVs from mainstream automakers.

Now the question arises why GM intends to develop a new infotainment system instead of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Neither Apple nor Android will charge automakers to install Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features in cars. However, the two tech giants have user data available every time a user uses Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

GM doesn’t seem happy with that, which is why the automaker intends to develop a new technology platform for the all-new infotainment system, which is unlikely to allow user data to be collected. Instead, the data collected from the new infotainment system will be owned exclusively by GM. The automaker could use the data in a number of ways, including improving navigation routing and other vehicle systems. GM can also sell the data to third parties. However, the automaker has yet to confirm these speculations.
