A lot of cars have been launched this year, including some battery-powered. As the country’s commuters warm to the idea of driving electric vehicles, automakers in the luxury and mass-market segments have been introducing new products or updating existing ones with more features and better range. As 2022 draws to a close, we take a look back at the year’s most talked about EV launches.
While all the EVs launching this year have their own unique twists, here are the top five ones people must know:
1. Volvo XC40 Recharge

After quite a delay, Volvo Cars India launched the XC40 Recharge in July this year.Selling for ¥5.590 million (ex-showroom), the EV is based on the ICE version of the XC40 SUV. When launched, the battery-powered model is the most affordable offering in the country’s luxury EV segment. It competes with other luxury EVs such as the Kia EV6, Jaguar I-Pace and Mercedes EQC. The EV draws power from a 78 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, allowing it to travel more than 400 kilometers on a single charge. However, the electric SUV has a certified range of about 335 kilometers, which is more likely to be real-world range.

2. Kia EV6

2022 Kia EV6 launched in India, priced from ¥5.995 million.
The Kia EV6 was brought to India in a limited number of 100 units, more of a showcase of the automaker’s intentions in the Indian EV segment. The automaker has informed that all of these units are already pre-ordered when the electric car is launched here in June. It is the first all-electric model based on Kia’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which allows for different body styles and cabin layouts. The Kia EV6 comes in two variants, a more affordable variant with rear-wheel drive and another with all-wheel drive. While the performance credentials of the EVs differ, both feature a 77.4 kWh battery pack at their heart.

3. Tata Nexon EV Max

Tata Nexon EV Max launched in India ¥1.774 million.
The Tata Nexon EV Max is a long-range version of the automaker’s popular Nexon electric vehicle.It will be launched domestically in May this year, with a starting price of ¥1.774 million, rising to ¥1.924 million (ex-showroom). With an ARAI-certified range of 437 km per charge, the Nexon EV Max is expected to surpass a handful of rivals like the Hyundai Kona and MG ZS EV. The vehicle is powered by a larger battery than the one on the Nexon EV. It comes with a boot capacity of 350 liters.

4. MG ZS Electric Vehicle
MG ZS electric car
In March this year, MG Motor India launched a facelifted version of the ZS EV with a starting price of ¥2.199 million (ex-showroom). Upgrades include a range of 461 kilometers per charge and a more premium cabin. It’s the company’s only all-electric offering right now, though more affordable EVs are also planned. The ZS EV now comes with a more powerful 50.3 kWh battery and has an IP69 water resistance rating.

5. BYD Atto 3
BYD Atto 3 is currently arriving in India as a SKD kit, but local assembly is also possible
Launched in India in October, the BYD Atto 3 is the second electric car from the Chinese automaker for private buyers in India after the e6. The EV has an ARAI-tested range of 521 kilometers and an output of 200 horsepower and 310 Nm of torque. It has a 60.48 kWh battery pack and comes with an 8-year warranty.

The cabin is equipped with features such as swivel screens, eight-speaker audio, NFC cards for entry, and more.
