Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI) may be India’s top scooter brand, but the Japanese two-wheeler maker faces stiff competition from its erstwhile Indian partner, homegrown two-wheeler giant Hero MotoCorp, which tops the overall segment. . The latter has long held the top spot with its best-selling Splendor series of motorcycles. However, with the recent launch of the Honda Shine 100, the former OEM aims to break that mold.
The new Honda Shine 100 commuter motorcycle is a direct competitor to the Hero Splendor Plus, along with other models such as the Hero HF Dawn, Bajaj Platina 100 and TVS Radeon.Selling for ¥64,900 (ex-showroom, Maharashtra), the Honda Shine 100 is expected to boost the brand’s efforts in the 100 cc commuter motorcycle segment, the best-selling category in the Indian motorcycle market. Of all motorcycle sales in India, the 100cc segment accounts for 33% of the market share. Hero MotoCorp has captured a large portion of this segment with its Splendor line of motorcycles, selling about 250,000 Splendors per month.
