Honda two-wheeler India sales down 16% in January 2023

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) today released its sales figures for January 2023, where the company sold 296,363 units. Compared to 354,209 units in January 2022, the two-wheeler giant’s sales fell by 16.32% year-on-year. Honda’s sales were significantly lower than Hero MotoCorp, which sold 357,000 vehicles last month.

HMSI’s domestic sales were 278,143 units, down 11.76 percent from 315,196 units in January last year. The export volume was 18,220 vehicles, a sharp drop of 53.30% from 39,013 vehicles in the same period last year.

Commenting on the sales results, Atsushi Ogata, Managing Director, President and CEO of HMSI said: “Well ahead of the government’s deadline, HMSI recently launched its first OBD2 model, the new Activa with smart key. With this shift, HMSI will soon be upgrading its other products to meet the latest specifications. Additionally, the budget presented today articulates an increased focus on end-of-life vehicles, green transport and net-zero carbon emissions targets that outline the future of transport in the country , providing a roadmap for boosting the Indian automotive industry. We are optimistic that these initiatives will bring growth to the industry.”

Compared with 250,171 units in December 2022, Honda’s sales increased by 18.46% month-on-month. Sales at the Japanese two-wheeler maker fell slightly after a strong festive season, but the company is looking for a strong recovery with new products. The manufacturer recently launched an updated version of its best-selling product, the Activa 6G, to meet the upcoming OBD2 specification, and the company is also working on new products, including an entry-level commuter van and possibly another 350 cc product.
