Honda two-wheeler May sales down 7% despite new Shine 100, Activa launches

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) has released its May 2023 sales figures. The company sold a total of 329,393 units (domestic + export), which is a 6.7% year-on-year decrease compared to the 353,188 units sold in the same period last year in May 2022. Sales have declined despite Honda’s recent forays into the mass market with the launch of the Shine 100, an updated Activa line and more.

Honda Two-Wheelers May Sales Slump 6.7%, Up Increment vs. Hero, While TVS Nears Maker

In May 2023, Honda’s domestic two-wheeler sales were 311,144 units, a decrease of 3.02% from 320,844 units in the same period last year. The company exported 18,249 units last month, a sharp drop of 43.58% year-on-year compared to the 32,344 units it shipped last year.

In terms of monthly sales, Honda’s sales fell 12.1 percent compared to 3,74,747 units in April this year. While the company remains the second-largest maker of two-wheelers behind Hero, the gap between the two has widened further, with the latter selling more than 519,000 vehicles last month. TVS followed Honda with 319,295 units sold in May this year.

While Honda did not explain the reason for the drop in sales, the company has been working hard to broaden its product portfolio by launching more models that comply with the latest BS6 Phase 2 standard, while expanding the coverage of existing products.The new Honda Shine 100 commuter motorcycle was launched last month in three states namely Rajasthan, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh at an attractive price ¥62,900 (ex-showroom).

That said, the manufacturer has had an eventful year with plenty of activity. Last month, Honda launched a new BigWing for premium motorcycles in Panvel, Maharashtra. The company has also launched a new range of motor oils called “Pro Honda” for its range of two-wheelers in the country. In the end, Kavin Quintal of IDEMITSU Honda Racing India scored two points in the 2023 FIM Asian Road Racing Championship Round 2 (ARRC).
