Huber+Schuner | Upgraded RADOX® EV-C with High Voltage Flex Cable Simplifies Electric Vehicle Harness Preparation and Installation

IFRAME SYNC

The complexity of electric vehicle (EV) production often results in process and quality variations, inefficiencies, and reduced manufacturing performance. Due to the complex manufacturing solutions used in the production process, combined with an overburdened workforce, extended manufacturing times and errors leading to rework and scrap are commonplace.

With the RADOX® EV-C single-core connection system and RADOX® Flex high-voltage cables, HUBER+SUHNER enables manufacturers to reduce the effort required when installing wiring harnesses to EVs. Specifically designed and developed for heavy-duty vehicles, the solution offers greater freedom and flexibility to route and organize the layout of high-voltage cables more efficiently.

“Typically, the cables with large cross-sections used in EVs are long, heavy and relatively stiff”, says Robert Weirauch, Product Manager Connection Systems at HUBER+SUHNER. “This results in longer installation times for manufacturers as a lot of manual work is required to properly route the high voltage cables at every corner of the vehicle. The electrification of heavy vehicles is also making harsh operating conditions commonplace. In order to have uninterrupted power And to keep the high voltage connection system in place, it is important to optimize the layout and all fixing points according to each requirement”.

The effectiveness and efficiency of a high voltage connection system depends on correct cable laying, quality and secure fixation of the connectors. As a result of this offering, HUBER+SUHNER has become one of the first companies to offer a complete, proven connection system for EVs that combines the advantages of RADOX® Flex high-voltage cables with the outstanding straight-through EV-C. Automakers and system suppliers alike can combine Flex cables with EV-C to meet their individual design needs. All elements of the system have been validated and released into series production.

“Time to market (TTM) has always been an important consideration for most original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), but this has become even more important post-pandemic,” continued Weirauch. “With supply chain disruptions, component shortages and extended lead times, manufacturers need to take every possible advantage to quickly position their products in the market. Using off-the-shelf products such as the EV-C with RADOX® Flex cables can significantly Shorter TTM. Furthermore, these well-proven solutions comply with the latest high-voltage automotive standards. Thanks to the new solutions, customers can now quickly adapt existing products to individual system or powertrain architectures for heavy-duty vehicles.”

The EV-C single core connection system is supplied with RADOX® Flex high voltage cables in a variety of sizes to meet the most common heavy duty requirements: 50mm270 mm2 and 120 mm295mm2 Available upon verification.

The solution will be presented for the first time at the Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Technology Expo 2023 in Stuttgart, Germany, from May 23 to 25.
