Hyundai will officially launch the Ioniq 5 electric car in India on January 11 next year.The South Korean automaker has already started taking preorders for the electric crossover ¥100,000 following its debut on Tuesday, December 20. The Ioniq 5 is the second EV in India after the Kona Electric SUV. However, the Ioniq 5 promises to be a more premium offering than the Kona given its new-age EV platform and technology.

On the face of it, it’s a tech sibling to the Kia EV6 that was launched in India earlier this year and shares some similarities. However, there are also differences. Here’s how the Hyundai Ioniq 5 differs from the Kia EV6 in terms of range, features and specs.

The electric vehicle platform on which the two EVs are based was jointly developed by a duo of South Korean automakers. The E-GMP platform is used in all new generation electric vehicles of Hyundai and Kia globally. However, there are minor differences in the specifications of the two models. The Hyundai EV has a slightly smaller stand than the Kia EV. However, the difference in length of 60mm is almost negligible. While the two EVs are exactly the same width, the Ioniq 5 is 55mm taller than the EV6. In terms of wheelbase, the Hyundai EV is around 100mm longer than its Korean partner, which promises more interior space.

Hyundai’s electric crossover packs a host of features, including a 12.3-inch digital console and touchscreen infotainment system. There’s also connected car technology with more than 60 functions, a Bose sound system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, ventilated seats with memory, and more. What sets the Ioniq 5 apart from its Koran rivals is its customizable interior and removable center console.

The Kia EV6 also features curved HD displays for the main infotainment system and driver display. The front two seats feature zero-gravity reclining. Other features include a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting and wireless charging.

Both vehicles offer separate charging ports that can charge other gadgets and household devices, as well as other EVs, while on the go. In terms of safety, both EVs offer ADAS capabilities, along with a long list of other features.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 vs Kia EV6: Performance and range

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 will be equipped with a 72.6 kWh battery pack capable of driving 631 kilometers on a single charge (ARAI certified). The EV features a single axle-mounted electric motor producing 214 bhp of power and 350 Nm of peak torque. Hyundai claims it can charge an EV from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes using a 350 kW DC charger.

The Kia EV6 gets its energy from a smaller 77.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. However, it has a shorter range compared to the Ioniq 5. Based on the WLTP certified range (European standard), the Kia EV6 can travel more than 500 kilometers on a single charge. Using a 150 kWh DC fast charger, it can charge from 10% to 80% in about 40 minutes. The Kia EV6 RWD version has a maximum output power of 229 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque, while the four-wheel drive version is more powerful, with a maximum power of 347 horsepower and a peak torque of 605 Nm.

In terms of price, Hyundai will announce the price of Ioniq 5 next month.The Kia EV6, launched earlier this year, starts at ¥5.995 million (ex-showroom), making it a premium offering.However, according to reports, Hyundai may price the Ioniq 5 at ¥5 million and up, making it more affordable than its competitors.
