Hyundai has announced that it is recalling 853 Kona EVs in the US due to a coolant leak issue. Leaks inside the electric power control unit (EPCU) of some Koan EVs could cause loss of power and even stall the vehicle, the automaker said. However, the South Korean automaker also said it was not aware of any accidents due to the fault, but had received several reports of power outages. The car brand also said that problems with affected models will be fixed by its dealers free of charge.

Affected 2021 Hyundai Kona EVs are equipped with an EPCU that may be insufficiently sealed at the DC converter housing. The failure was reportedly caused by insufficient steam cleaning during the production of critical components.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in its recall documents that the affected vehicles may experience an internal coolant leak that could eventually contaminate the main controller, which could trigger the Kona EV’s limited mobility “failsafe “model. This could cause the vehicle to suddenly lose power, or even stall completely. Depending on pollution conditions, some owners may receive a warning message on the driver information display.

The car brand also claims that it discovered the potential problem as early as November this year. After an internal investigation, Hyundai decided to advance the recall before December 9 this year. However, dealers will not be notified of the recall until February 14 next year. The automaker will simultaneously notify owners of affected vehicles about the recall. Hyundai also sells the Kona EV in India. It is unclear whether the India-spec models are also affected by this issue.
