Powering the BMW R18 Transcontinental is an air-/oil-cooled two-cylinder flat-twin engine with a capacity of 1,802 cc. It produces 89 bhp at 4,750 rpm and a peak torque output of 158 Nm at 3,000 rpm. Even more impressive, more than 150 Nm of torque is available at 2,000 – 4,000 rpm. All this torque is sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed gearbox using shaft drive. BMW also uses an anti-jump clutch to eliminate rear wheel hop. BMW Motorrad also offers a reverse gear as an optional extra.

The BMW R18 Transcontinental offers three driving modes. There is Rain, Roll and Rock. In Rain mode, the throttle response is softer and the safety features are most sensitive. Then there’s Roll mode, in which the engine optimizes throttle response while adjusting safety features for maximum performance. Finally, there’s Rock mode, which has the sharpest throttle response and automatic stability control that allows for more slip.
