Honda Motor Company has issued a safety recall for 15,848 Navi motorcycles in the United States. The recall affects the 2022 model year iteration of Honda’s Navi due to improper routing of the speedometer cable. The Japanese two-wheeler giant said in a filing with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the speedometer cable could break or become detached, rendering the speedometer unusable. This could increase the risk of a crash or injury.

According to the document, incorrect wiring of the speedometer on the Honda Navi can cause the speedometer cover to have a gap and an inadequate fit with the pinion. Potential breakage could occur on the speedometer side or cause the brake panel side to separate.

The issue was first discovered in February 2022, and Honda of America has since launched an investigation into the issue. Several user reports followed that the speedometer cable on the motorcycle was broken or detached. There have been no reports of injuries due to component failure.

Honda of America has notified its dealer network of the issue and has issued a cease-and-desist notice for all new and used 2022 Navis. Manufacturers will be the first to correct the problems in these models, while owner notification is scheduled to begin on May 1, 2023. Honda Navi owners can contact their respective dealerships for a recall service in which faulty parts will be replaced free of charge. Owners who have had the faulty part replaced at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement, subject to documentation.

Honda Navi motorcycles are manufactured in India and exported to various markets around the world, including Latin America and the United States. Developed by Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI), the Navi has not had much acceptance in the country, but the model is seen in the West as a fun and lightweight city runabout, where it has seen strong demand. The scooter uses a 109 cc single cylinder engine with an automatic transmission. Navi starts at $1,807 (approximately ¥148,000), making it the most affordable Honda sold in the United States.
