Hero MotoCorp recently filed a patent application for what appears to be a large scooter. The world’s largest two-wheeler maker, Hero has traditionally operated in the mass-market segment, but the company is shifting its focus to the premium segment, which appears to include motorcycles and scooters. While there is no official word on the model, the upcoming maxi scooter could be the company’s new flagship.
The Hero range of scooters includes Xoom, Pleasure, Maestro Edge and Destini models with 110 cc and 125 cc engines. The upcoming product is likely to be a 125 cc offering to compete with the likes of the Aprilia SXR125 and Suzuki Burgman Street 125 in this segment. It will be interesting to see if Hero steps up a segment and introduces a competitor to the Yamaha Aerox 155 with an engine displacement between 150-160 cc. While traditional maxi scooters use larger displacement engines in developed markets, the segment is still in its infancy in the Indian market.

Judging from the patent images, the upcoming Hero maxi scooter will adopt a relatively large proportion of sports styling. This includes a high apron with twin headlights and a slim frame with a panel on the floor that really takes away from the scooter’s practicality. That said, it will be a sporty offering with big alloy wheels, a step-up single seater, telescoping front forks and twin dampers at the rear. The scooter also has an engine mounted on the swingarm.
While it would be bold for Hero to launch a large scooter that can cater to multiple markets around the world, not every patented design makes it to production. However, with the company’s renewed focus on the premium segment, we’d really like to see this model hit showrooms. That said, the maxi scooter is still a while away from launch.

Meanwhile, Hero MotoCorp plans to launch several new motorcycles. The company recently launched the Xtreme 160R 4V, and the Karizma XMR 210 is expected to be the next big thing from the manufacturer.
