While battery fires involving electric vehicles are uncommon, when they do occur, the consequences can be severe. Compared with an internal combustion engine vehicle fire, an electric vehicle fire requires more effort and resources from firefighters to fight, because the intensity of an electric vehicle battery fire is much more severe than an internal combustion engine vehicle fire event. However, vehicles powered by internal combustion engines that run on highly flammable fossil fuels such as gasoline or diesel are more prone to fire than electric vehicles.

The number of electric vehicles worldwide has increased dramatically over the past few years, keeping pace with consumer demand. Naturally, there has been a huge increase in the number of EV recalls by various automakers around the world.
