Mahindra to set up electric vehicle factory in Telangana, second after Pune

Mahindra and Mahindra have signed an agreement with the Telangana government to set up an electric vehicle manufacturing plant in the state.The new facility will form part of Mahindra’s overall investment in the electric vehicle business, worth approximately ¥10,000 million. The factory in Telangana will cost the automaker about ¥10 crore, it will be the second such manufacturing plant besides Pune, Maharashtra. The Telangana plant will produce Mahindra’s electric three-wheelers, such as the Treo, as well as electric four-wheelers.

According to the agreement signed by both parties, Mahindra will invest in the fund within eight years. The facility will be located at Mahindra’s Zaheerabad facility to develop last mile mobility business. The plant will also produce passenger vehicles such as the XUV400 electric SUV, Mahindra said in a regulatory filing. The agreement includes Mahindra’s appeal to the state government to approve the expansion of the existing Zahneerabad plant.

In December last year, Mahindra announced that it would open a new electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Pune, Maharashtra.Automakers will invest in ¥10,000 crore for new EV facilities and the investment has been approved under the Maharashtra Government’s Electric Vehicle Industry Promotion Programme. Mahindra has boosted funding to accelerate its EV plans as it aims to launch as many as five more EVs in India in the next few years. Mahindra is currently offering the XUV400 electric SUV as part of a new EV range in the country.

Earlier in August 2022, Mahindra unveiled its new BE brand for electric vehicles in Oxfordshire, UK. The new BE car marks a new chapter in Mahindra’s EV program and will be based on the newly developed INGLO EV platform. The new EV architecture will spawn a range of future electric SUVs under the BE brand, and will also lead to a new electric SUV under the “XUV” brand.

Mahindra’s recently launched EV is seen as an attempt to compete with Tata Motors, which is currently the leader in India’s EV market with the largest share. With Nexon EV, Tiago EV and Tigor EV, Tata Motors leads the electric four-wheeler market in India with more than three-quarters market share.
