Mahindra XUV400 now open for pre-orders, aims to challenge Tata Nexon EV supremacy

Mahindra and Mahindra started taking pre-orders for its latest electric vehicle, the XUV400, today.Launched last year, the electric SUV launches this month with prices starting at ¥1.599 million (ex-showroom).With two models to choose from, the price of the electric SUV rises to ¥1.899 million (ex-showroom). All prices are introductory and valid for the first 5,000 pre-orders Mahindra receives through its official website. Deliveries are expected to begin in March this year. Mahindra also claims that it aims to deliver 20,000 units of the XUV400 within a year of its launch.

Mahindra has launched two variants of the XUV400 electric SUV – EC and EL. Both variants offer two sets of batteries and charging options. EC models of the XUV400 feature a 34.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with either a 3.3 kW charging option or a higher 7.2 kW charging option.A second EC variant with a higher charging capacity is priced at ¥1.649 million (ex-showroom). The higher-spec EL variant comes with a 39.4 kWh battery pack and only offers a 7.2 kW charging option.

The Mahindra XUV400 promises the highest range of any small electric SUV currently available in India. The top-spec EL variant is claimed to offer a range of 456km on a single charge, while the lower EC variant offers up to 375km. In terms of performance, both variants of the XUV400 have similar outputs. The EV can produce up to 150 PS of maximum power and 310 Nm of peak torque. Mahindra also claims that the XUV400 is the fastest accelerating EV in its segment, with a 0-100 km/h time of just 8.3 seconds. It also offers a top speed of 150 km/h. The XUV400 will have three different driving modes – Fun, Fast and Fearless.

The Mahindra XUV400 is the first of many electric vehicles the automaker plans to launch in India. The new generation of electric vehicles aims to challenge Tata Motors’ dominance in India’s electric four-wheeler segment, which has an overall market share of close to 90%. The XUV400 will go head-to-head with the Tata Nexon EV in terms of pricing and offer range. Nexon EV offers more variants than XUV400 at prices between ¥1.499 million and ¥1.75 million (all prices are ex-showroom and before any subsidies).
