Maruti to launch six battery electric vehicles in India by 2030: Suzuki

After SUVs, Maruti Suzuki’s next focus in India will be all about electric vehicles. It showed off its first electric concept car, the eVX, at the recently concluded Auto Expo 2023, which is expected to enter production in 2025. Now, its Japanese partner Suzuki Motors has confirmed that the automaker will launch six electric vehicles in European countries over the next seven years. Maruti Suzuki is currently the leading automaker in India with a market share of over 40%. However, it is the only automaker in the top five that has yet to join the EV race in India.

Maruti has unveiled its FY2030 strategy, which aims to become carbon neutral. Suzuki was quoted by news agency PTI as saying, “In India, we will launch the SUV battery electric vehicle announced at Auto Expo 2023 in fiscal year 2024 and six models by fiscal year 2030.” By then, hybrid vehicles will account for 15 percent of its overall lineup in the country, while hybrid electric vehicles will account for about 25 percent.

Maruti Suzuki aims to introduce not only electric vehicles but also more models based on CNG, biogas and ethanol blends. “While we expect the Indian market to grow in FY2030, we also expect an increase in total CO2 emissions to be inevitable regardless of reductions in CO2 emissions from products. We will challenge the balance between increasing units sold and reducing total volume balance CO2 emissions in between,” Suzuki said.

Maruti currently has more than 10 models available in CNG versions in India. It also showcased the flex-fuel-based WagonR model at the Auto Expo. However, the automaker has yet to launch any models based on biogas fuel. “This biogas can be used in Suzuki’s compressed natural gas vehicles, which account for about 70 percent of the CNG vehicle market in India,” said Suzuki. verify.
