Mass Unemployment vs. Mass Mobility Revolution?Risk Drivers of Change

IFRAME SYNC

The world is moving towards zero-emission mobility, and the number of options continues to grow when it comes to cars, bikes and even buses and trucks. Vehicles with internal combustion engines, while still very, very common, are on their way to extinction. In some countries it may take several years, in others it may take decades. But the advent of new technology vehicles also has some indirect effects, such as possible layoffs at production facilities.

Fewer parts and increasing reliance on automation in electric vehicles (EVs) are two factors that pose a huge threat to jobs in manufacturing plants, especially in the EU. In fact, the EU recently delayed a crucial vote on a ban on internal combustion engine cars due to concerns raised by Germany. The country raised questions about how such a ban would affect the entire auto industry and the use of e-fuels in vehicles after 2035.

But there is also growing concern about layoffs. In February, Ford announced it would cut about 3,800 jobs in Europe to strengthen its electric vehicle portfolio. Hardest hit will be employees in Germany and the UK. Overall, many point to the rising cost of electric vehicle manufacturing and inflationary pressures in the U.S. and Europe as key factors in manufacturers’ desire to gain a firmer grip on wallets. Competition has intensified as electric vehicle leader Tesla slashed prices on many of its models.

The future may be all about electric vehicles, with companies like Ford, General Motors, Nissan, Hyundai, Honda and Mercedes announcing their respective intentions to stop selling cars with conventional engines by 2040. But while that may be good news in the fight to curb electric vehicle greenhouse gas emissions, its impact on work scenarios may be less than ideal.
