Mother’s Day Special: A Mom, a Son, a Bike, and a Country to Explore

It takes a special woman to transcend the limitations of her age to explore the vastness of India. It takes a special son to make her wish come true. This is the story of Vrindha Mahesh from Kerala, riding a Bajaj Dominar 400 with her son Sabareesh Mahesh to discover the beauty of the country. Vrindha does know how to ride a gearless scooter—she’s been riding them for the past decade. Now, however, she’s more open to cars, so she’s been learning to drive for the past few months.

The mother and son duo have traveled throughout the Himalayas, Nepal, Nagaland and Bhutan. As a housewife, she was always asking herself what else to do besides the traditional roles people told her to cling to. She found the answer by interacting with people from different backgrounds and cultures during the ride. “I have a better understanding of the many different ways of life that exist,” she said. This exposure helped her question society’s expectations of women and increase her self-awareness and self-acceptance.

The pair even conquered the mighty Khardungla pass. Vrindha had a wish to wear a traditional Kerala saree in the freezing cold of the Himalayas. It was -10 degrees and she told herself she could walk the Khardungla pass in a sari swing without any jacket. When young adults came to her and appreciated her conquering the Himalayas at this age, she fulfilled her wish and felt confident.

One trip that fascinated her was the two on a flight to Manali. The entire itinerary is planned based on the use of public transport options. However, Vrindha wanted to ride a bicycle. So the pair went to a bike rental shop, where she spotted a Royal Enfield Himalayan, which they rented for five days. As qualified adventure touring travelers, the two were very comfortable on the motorcycle. Riding the Royal Enfield Himalaya is now on Vrindha’s wish list.
