Volvo reveals details of city-based safety features its upcoming EX30 electric SUV will offer

The Volvo EX30 will be equipped with a door open alert, which will warn occupants with visual and audio prompts when you are about to open a door in front of a passing cyclist or other traffic user. Such “door opening accidents”, in which owners inadvertently open their doors into the path of cyclists, account for a fifth of all cycling accidents reported in the UK each year, the carmaker said.

“We have long been concerned with safety in urban environments where cars share space with pedestrians and cyclists,” says Åsa Haglund, head of our Safety Center. “With the Volvo EX30, we’ve taken urban safety to the next level, creating a small SUV that’s the perfect companion for your comfortable driving experience while looking after you and others on the busy streets of a modern city.”

Additionally, the upcoming Volvo EX30 will feature a reinforced safety cage including the A, B and C pillars and roof. The automaker says its smallest SUV ever is designed to the same global safety standards as the brand’s larger models. Given its electric nature, Volvo has also focused on ensuring battery integrity remains intact, and the chassis and safety cage are made from various forms of high-strength steel that can effectively counteract the effects of a possible crash.

The Volvo EX30 will also feature a far side airbag inside the driver’s seat, designed to help reduce head and chest injuries in side collisions, as well as new active safety features to help protect occupants and pedestrians. Additionally, the EX30 will come standard with a new Advanced Driver Alert system with steering wheel manual detection. This brings with it a special sensor located behind the steering wheel that detects eye and facial movements about 13 times per second. Cars will be able to understand if a driver is distracted, drowsy or inattentive.

Finally, the new EX30 will get a new Intersection Auto Braking feature designed specifically for the city to help avoid accidents at intersections. In the unlikely event that another vehicle unexpectedly passes in front of you, the automatic braking feature will help mitigate or avoid a collision.
