Nissan is reportedly working on a custom all-electric sports car to replace its iconic GT-R sports car, also known as Godzilla for its sheer power and performance. The Japanese automaker’s Nismo performance division is reportedly in charge of designing and building the custom EV. British publication Autocar says electric cars are on track to hit the market by the end of the decade. However, the automaker hasn’t revealed any concrete timeline for the electric sports car. Nissan further revealed that there will be no rush to launch the model.

The Nismo electric sports car is expected to be powered by solid-state batteries for long-term viability. However, while the automaker and several other car brands are working on solid-state batteries, the technology is not yet mature enough to be commercially viable. The high cost of these batteries has deterred automakers from using them in their electric vehicles, which would significantly increase costs. This may be one reason why Nissan has opted for a wait-and-see strategy for the upcoming electric sports car from its Nismo division.

Takao Katagiri, CEO of Nissan’s Nismo division, confirmed the project. He said the custom model is very important to Nissan. He also hinted that the car will be launched in European markets first, especially in the UK. “Europe has a very, very important vision for Nissan. It revolves around the heart of this new car. This region is very, very special to us, especially for performance cars. So one thing I can say is please Hold on. We will be introducing a very exciting model to the UK market under the Nismo brand,” he said.

Nissan has said it hopes to have its first production car powered by solid-state batteries by 2028. From this, we can estimate that the all-electric sports car that will replace the Nissan GT-R will hit the market around 2030. But it won’t be an easy feat for Nissan’s electric sports car, given the long list of rivals from Porsche, Polestar and McLaren.

Interestingly, Nissan released the Max-Out concept car earlier this year, which attracted a lot of attention. Here’s a preview of the electric coupe with a sporty design that was revealed to the world. This hints that the automaker is working on a design study to make the brand’s future EVs sportier.
