No more range anxiety in winter. This Chinese EV battery tech is hardened against the cold

Dawan Technology, a Chinese EV battery technology start-up owned by Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC), claims it has a solution to one of the biggest drawbacks of EV batteries – range loss in cold weather. Bloomberg quoted the company as saying that its Phoenix battery line uses a technology that can withstand low temperatures.

The Phoenix battery is equipped with superconducting materials and an advanced thermal management system that allows the battery to heat up from -15 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius in just five minutes. The company also claims that the battery works well in all climates and takes less than 6 minutes to charge. As a result, the battery is said to improve driving range and be much safer than current EV batteries.

The new technology is a major breakthrough in electric vehicles, as thermal inefficiency and reduced range during cold weather have been a major concern for electric vehicle manufacturers. Electric vehicles can lose up to 35% of their range in freezing temperatures. However, the range drop varies between different EVs. Some EV makers, such as Tesla, use features like heat pumps and battery preconditioning to reduce the impact of cold temperatures on batteries and range, but it’s a costly affair.

Talking about the newly developed Phoenix battery pack, it is claimed to provide a range of 200km from just a 5-minute charge. Additionally, the company says the battery can charge from 0% to 80% in just eight minutes. The battery will debut in GAC’s Aion V LX Plus, an SUV that promises a range of more than 1,000 kilometers on a single charge. The startup is also reportedly in discussions with other automakers interested in purchasing new battery packs.

To develop the technology, which enables ultra-fast charging and improves thermal efficiency even in cold weather, the startup has joined hands with other EV makers and battery technology development companies such as Ningde Times, BYD, Guoxuan Hi-Tech and others .
