Ola S1 Pro MoveOS 3 review: Frills and fun, and tons of convenience

IFRAME SYNC

The Ola S1 series electric scooter models have finally received the much-anticipated MoveOS3 software update, which brings to life several important promises that Ola Electric has been making for a long time. While many of the new updates focus on the fun aspects of the e-scooter model, there are also several key convenience options, the biggest being the Hypercharger network that is now available for fast charging.

The Ola MoveOS 3 software update rolled out late last week, just before Christmas, for the S1 and S1 Pro models. It is important to note that the most affordable model of Ola’s e-scooter – the Ola S1 Air – is yet to receive a software update. Still, the bulk of the models already hitting Indian roads are the S1 and S1 Pro, and there’s still a lot to look forward to for owners of these models.

The entire process of downloading and updating the software on our Ola S1 Pro test device to MoveOS 3 took about 35 minutes with minimal user intervention.

Here’s a brief review of the feature updates that MoveOS 3 brings to the Ola S1 and S1 Pro models:

Watch: Ola Move OS 3: Major feature update

overcharge

This is the biggest highlight of MoveOS 3, the so-called lightning fast charging is now open for testing. Although the network of Ola Hyperchargers is still limited – there were only three in Delhi at the time of this test drive, does it make sense to hunt around for one?

Ola claims that just 15 minutes of charging will increase the range of the S1 electric scooter by about 50 kilometers. We took our test unit to one such unit at the BPCL petrol station in Delhi’s Connaught Place.

Currently, Supercharging is free and works on a plug-and-play basis. We plugged it in and it had a range of 80km, and after 20 minutes that figure had increased to 100km. We have observed faster charging when the remaining charge is below 70%, so it may be a good option in emergency-based needs.

Proximity lock and unlock

Ola electric scooters do not have physical keys. Depending on the situation, this can be good or bad. You won’t lose a key that doesn’t exist, but as a result, you’ll have to physically enter the digital code every time you want to start or interact with the e-scooter. no longer.

Ola S1 Pro automatically unlocks every time you approach and locks when you move away. You can also do this by clicking a button on the Ola Electric app. For all of you asking what happens if the trunk is locked by the charger and the scooter runs out of battery – here’s your answer.

hill assist

Ola MoveOS 3 offers Hill Hold Assist, but still requires the rider to pay attention to the warning beep at all times to avoid any mishaps.

Ola electric scooters have a dedicated button for reverse mode, but Hill Hold Assist has also been long requested. Activate the feature from the settings tab on the scooter screen, then follow the on-screen instructions to turn it on or off.

While the feature is still in beta and on our review unit we were able to activate it on screen, it’s not available on mobile.

regenerative braking

Regenerative braking is fairly common on EVs and is also available in various levels of intensity. The idea is to slow down the EV when there is no throttle input and send kinetic energy to charge the battery.

Science aside, it works well on the S1 Pro model and helps reduce finger fatigue on long rides. However, it is still recommended that people always pay attention and be ready to actually pull the brake lever when needed.

party mode

Now this is where we disagree. The extroverts on the team thought it was a cool highlight, but the introverts could hardly agree. Ola scooters come with built-in speakers, but MoveOS 3 adds a feature that allows the scooter’s lights to flash to the beat of the music being played.

does it work? certainly. should be? It’s entirely up to you.

There are also some other great feature highlights like multiple moods, which are essentially themes for the screen, a vacation mode that allows the electric scooter to be parked for up to 200 days without draining the battery, on-screen call notifications, and digital documents stored in The scooter itself.
