A one-off version of the Bugatti Chiron hypercar has sold for a record price at RM Sotheby’s Paris auction.

The winning bid of €9,792,500 (equivalent to £8,695,000) secured a unique Profilée model.

That more than doubled the previous record price for the Chiron and made it the most expensive new car ever sold at auction.

Unveiled in December 2022, the Profilee was originally conceived as a trimmed-down version of the handling-focused Chiron Pur Sport. Bugatti’s customers clearly wanted the extra performance of the Pur Sport, but without the dramatic fixed rear wing.

Bugatti set out to design a model with a swept rear wing and increased power output. However, while the engineering process is ongoing, it’s clear that all 500 build slots for the Chiron have been accounted for. This means that Profilée will never go into production.

Nonetheless, Bugatti opted to build a “pre-series” Chiron Profilée, directly through the RM Sotheby’s auction. So the Profilee is the last of the new Chirons for sale.

Speed limit is 236 mph

The Profilée has a sleeker rear spoiler with a large cut-out section to allow hot air to escape. This creates enough downforce to keep the 1,500-horsepower Bugatti on the ground at high speeds, and works with a revised splitter and front grille.

In line with the Chiron Pur Sport, the Profilée raises the rev limit of the W16 engine by 200rpm. This allows for a limited top speed of 236 mph, plus a 0-180 mph time of just 12.4 seconds.

It adds to its list of achievements by making Profilée the fastest-accelerated version of the Chiron.

Internal and external customization

Bugatti has opted for a two-tone exterior color scheme, with unique “Argent Atlantique” paintwork complemented by blue exposed carbon fiber. The car’s alloy wheels are also unique, mimicking the Chiron’s horseshoe-shaped front grille.

Inside the Profilee you can find more than 2,600 meters of woven leather straps, each one handcrafted.

All of this has ensured that the Profilée’s very lucky – and indeed very wealthy – new owner has a truly unique piece of Bugatti history.
