Sony, Honda reveals its first electric car ahead of 2023 CES debut

Sony Honda Mobile (SHM), a joint venture between Sony and Honda, has officially confirmed that it will unveil its new electric vehicle (EV) at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on January 4. The joint venture expects to begin production of its first electric vehicle in 2026, with a focus on North American production and online sales for that market. Japan will be the second market, followed by the European market. Sony released a trailer with the announcement. However, the teaser image doesn’t offer a clear look at the model.

Sony and Honda may unveil new EV concepts with Level 3 autonomous driving features.

While many details are yet to be confirmed, Sony Honda Mobility says the car may be capable of Level 3 autonomy under certain conditions and Level 2+ autonomy in a wider range of settings. The company also suggests adding some features to the car through the use of a subscription service. There are also reports that the car’s infotainment system may include a full version of the PlayStation 5.

Sony Honda Mobility’s upcoming EVs will reportedly be offered in the premium EV segment, meaning that while mass-market consumers may not be able to fully afford them, the products have the potential to undercut the luxury car brand’s offerings.

Sony will be tasked with supplying the software systems inside the EV and will be responsible for cloud-based services and in-car entertainment options. Honda will contribute its vehicle manufacturing expertise and engineering capabilities to the joint venture with Sony. It’s unclear whether Honda or Sony Honda Mobile (SHM) will be in charge of aftermarket support. Sony Honda Mobility announced that pre-orders for the first car produced by the joint venture will begin in the first half of 2025.

Earlier this year, at CES 2022, Sony showed off its second EV concept, the Vision-S 02.
