Sweden will open the world’s first permanently electrified road in 2025, which will have the ability to charge electric cars on the move. The European country aims to electrify more than 3,000 kilometers of highways as it aims to build a strong ecosystem to support electric vehicles. Euro News reports that the historic electrified highway will be called the Electric Road System (ERS) and will allow EV owners to travel greater distances between charging stations.

The report also said that the highway chosen for the project is the E20, which is located in the heart of major Swedish cities such as Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. It is said to be the first part of a larger plan that envisions electrifying more than 3,000 kilometers of Swedish roads. However, the report also mentions that authorities have yet to determine what type of electric road will be used on the first expressway.

The European country has been a pioneer in the electrification of its road network. It has been testing this electrified road and has trialled three leading solutions. Back in 2016, the country opened a two-kilometer overhead line that allows heavy vehicles to be charged via pantographs, much like the technology used by trains or trams. Later, the 1.6-kilometer section was energized using charging coils located under the asphalt. In 2018, the country introduced the world’s first charging track on a two-kilometre stretch, allowing electric trucks to lower their moving arms to draw energy.

Talking about the upcoming ERS technology, it will use an inductive off-road charging system. This technology is very similar to the Qi wireless charging used in mobile phones. Embed the pads or plates under the road, and electric cars equipped with receiving coils will charge as they pass by. Interestingly, such products have also been tested in Germany and the US.
