Taiwanese electric two-wheeler manufacturer Gogoro has announced that it will set up electric vehicle and battery manufacturing plants in Pune and Aurangabad in Maharashtra.The company will invest the most $The project approved by the Maharashtra state government costs Rs 4,000 crore.According to the state government, Gogoro’s electric vehicle and battery manufacturing plant will invest in $12,482 crore. The company signed an agreement with the state government in January this year.
As part of the deal, Gogoro will build battery swap infrastructure and build a manufacturing plant by the end of this year. Over the next few years, Gogoro will set up 12,000 battery swap stations across the state. A battery swap station is a place where EV owners can quickly swap out an empty battery for a fully charged one.
Earlier, Gogoro entered the Indian market last year with its battery swap network, while also partnering with Zypp Electric for a pilot project. It has also approved the 2-series range of electric scooters in India. Commenting on the latest developments, Gogoro founder and CEO Horace Luke said: “Building on Gogoro’s successful deployment of an open battery swap network supporting several automakers in Taiwan, we plan to continue our partnership with Maharashtra Gogoro to India starting from Maharashtra to ship vehicles, smart batteries and swap stations. We are committed to creating an ecosystem of domestic suppliers for domestic growth and foreign market expansion.”
Maharashtra currently leads all Indian states in the number of public EV charging stations. Of the 8,735 electric vehicle charging stations across the country, Maharashtra alone provides 2,354 charging stations.
In addition to offering swappable EV battery charging solutions, Gogoro is also expected to launch its own electric two-wheeler. Eknath Shinde, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, said: “Gogoro’s aim is to produce two-wheeled electric vehicles with its open and easy-to-use battery swapping technology, which is absolutely state-of-the-art. We have provided Gogoro with the necessary financial and other key incentives to usher in a new paradigm shift in the way we move people between metropolises and cities.”
Gogoro had earlier showcased its Series 2 electric scooters with swappable battery packs. In terms of specifications, the IDC cruising range of the standard version of the 2 Series is 85 kilometers, and the IDC cruising range of the Plus version can reach 94 kilometers. The 2 Series standard version promises a peak motor power of 7.2 kW (9.6 bhp), while the Pus version drops that to 6.4 kW (8.5 bhp).
