Ramirez said Tesla could build a factory in an industrial park under development about 3 kilometers (2 miles) from Felipe de Angelis International Airport (AIFA), which President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador opened the new hub last year.

“Tesla is looking at investing in the space to take advantage of AIFA,” Ramirez told Reuters late on Monday, noting that the site could serve as a base for the company’s airfreight exports.

He did not provide further details, but the comments follow recent comments made by Ramirez to El Heraldo de Mexico about Tesla’s investment prospects in Mexico.

“Tesla will invest there … an assembly plant, direct air freight for export,” Ramirez told the paper.

Separately, a Mexican official told Reuters that Tesla had visited the site but did not disclose its plans.

Chief Executive Elon Musk has been eyeing potential investments in the northern state of Nuevo Leon, which borders Texas, according to media reports and officials who spoke to Reuters.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ramirez told the Mexican Herald that Tesla is aiming to invest in T-MexPark, a large industrial complex near Felipe de Angelis Airport.
