Tesla has issued a voluntary recall of the Model Y electric crossover due to a faulty steering wheel. About 10% of Tesla Model Y vehicles built between June 23, 2022 and May 1, 2023 have defects, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed. During that time, Tesla produced 137 Model Y crossovers in the U.S., meaning about 14 vehicles were affected by the recall.

Loose fasteners in affected Tesla Model Y vehicles could cause the steering wheel to separate from the steering column.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents show that the recall was issued due to a faulty steering wheel in the affected Model Y cars. The guide wheels may not be properly secured, which could cause them to become disconnected from the steering column while driving, which could increase the risk of an accident. The recall addresses a different problem than the one highlighted by an NHTSA investigation in March of this year, which was linked to vehicles missing the bold letter that secures the steering wheel to the steering column. Investigators examined two reports of complete separation of the steering wheel from the steering column while driving. In the most recent recall, affected Tesla vehicles had retaining bolts, but they may not have been tightened to specifications, according to official recall reports.

The recall documents say the Model Y crossover’s steering wheel is attached to the steering column using fasteners. “Manufacturing and service records indicate a possible correlation between certain manufacturing record features and fasteners being installed that were not tightened to specification. Fasteners that were not tightened to specification could disconnect the steering wheel from the steering column,” the filing said. wrote in.

However, Tesla claims that it is not aware of any instances where the steering wheel has completely disengaged from the steering column due to this condition.
