Beverage maker Pepsi becomes the first major customer and operator of the Tesla Semi electric truck. The company said it would operate a fleet of 100 Tesla semi-electric trucks by 2023, Reuters reported. In fact, the automaker has already begun deliveries of its much-hyped semi-electric trucks to the food and beverage company. Orders were placed back in 2017, and PepsiCo is also the first customer of the giant electric trucks, using them to reduce their environmental impact. The company claims to have installed four 750-kilowatt Tesla charging stations at its California factory to charge large electric trucks.

PepsiCo plans to deploy 15 trucks from Modesto and 21 trucks from the Sacramento plant. Referring to its Tesla Semi fleet, PepsiCo vice president Mike O’Connell said it’s a good starting point for the company’s fleet electrification. “As with any early-stage technology, incentives helped us build the program,” he said, adding that there were significant development and infrastructure costs involved in the purchase. Among other companies, courier service provider United Parcel Service and food delivery company Sysco Corp have also ordered Tesla Semi trucks, while retailer Walmart is said to be testing alternatives.

The Tesla Semi has been one of the most anticipated electric trucks of all time. Since its debut over the past decade, the Tesla Semi’s production schedule has faced several bumps over the years. Tesla CEO Elon Musk first said the truck would go into production in 2019, but that was delayed due to battery constraints. The company has also postponed the project several times in a row. That has drawn accusations that EV makers overpromised and underdelivered. However, after numerous delays, the EV company was finally able to start production of the big truck a few months ago.

The Tesla Semi offers a range of up to 805 kilometers on a single charge. Another version is planned, offering a range of 480 kilometers on a single charge. However, a short-range version of the Tesla Semi truck has yet to enter production.
