Ford’s rollout of electric vehicles has been considered a success so far, and the automaker now plans to shift gears to accelerate electrification. As part of that strategy, the U.S. automaker teamed up with Volkswagen to start developing smaller, more compact electric vehicles. The automaker has now unveiled its first electric compact crossover based on Volkswagen’s EV-specific MEB platform, which is scheduled to make its full debut in the coming months. It will replace the famous Ford Fiesta hatchback in several markets.

The Ford EV will be built in Cologne, Germany, for the European market, where demand for the compact crossover is quite high. When it’s officially unveiled, it’s likely to return to the historic Ford nomenclature. Also, it may have similar specs to the VW ID. 4.

Martin Sander, Ford’s head of electrification for the Model E, teased the electric car on Twitter. Globally, the EV will compete against the likes of the Toyota bZ4X, Nissan Ariya and Volvo XC40 Recharge. Sander also said that electric vehicles will arrive in 2023. “Can’t wait for 2023 when we will unveil the first electric passenger car from Cologne,” he wrote on Twitter.

The teaser image didn’t reveal any important information. However, this suggests that the EV will be accompanied by significant changes to Ford’s design language. Expect the Bronco and F-150, two of the automaker’s most successful models, to influence its styling. Chunky LED headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights can be seen in the teaser images, along with a contrasting lower bumper and aerodynamically optimized wheel designs. The size and silhouette of the car can be made out even under the wrap.

In another teaser, the automaker’s European marketing chief Peter Zelig posted a darkened image of the car on LinkedIn, previewing the sleek LED lights that will be a hallmark of Ford’s new-age car. Iconic design element.
