West Bengal government transport minister Snehasis Chakraborty reportedly met app-based taxi aggregators on Tuesday and decided that app-based bikes will no longer be allowed to use private number plates in the state, according to reports. Interestingly, this comes at a time when app taxi aggregators such as Ola, Uber and Rapido have been asked to stop operating bike taxis on Delhi’s roads without a commercial license.

Currently, while some app-based bike taxis operate on the roads of Kolkata and various parts of the state with commercial registration plates, most bike taxis use traditional private registration plates as yellow plates are not mandatory until now. sexual. With the new regulations in place, owners of these bike taxis will have to opt for commercial registration. The government claims the move will ensure the creation of jobs for a large number of the population while generating revenue for the government.

The West Bengal government estimates that there are about 30,000 bike taxis in the state operating through an app-based taxi aggregation platform. A large number of these bike taxis are not registered as commercial, the state government said. The bike taxis operate on private registration, which will change with new rules making commercial registration mandatory.

The report also said that so far, commercially registered bicycle taxis can only provide services in three areas: Kolkata, Howrah City and South 24 Parganas. The state government widened the circle by adding North 24 Parganas and Hooghly to the list.
