With cars, bikes and even boats and planes going electric, why not apply battery technology to the humble skateboard? That’s exactly what skateboarding startup Defiant Board Society is doing with its Defiant: It promises to attract not only traditional fans, but new admirers as well.
Defiant: One is part of the e-skating culture the company wants to build, a throwback to the glory days of the past. While skateboarding isn’t anywhere near as popular as it has been in decades past, the introduction of electric powertrains could usher in a renaissance. Defiant: So gets a pair of 4.5kW 6396 electric motors that help it reach a top speed of around 60 kmph. Multiple speed modes ensure that it can also have a cruising range of about 64 kilometers if riding at a more comfortable speed. The lower speed also helps newbies get used to the way the skateboard moves.
The 46-inch American maple tops claim to provide a comfortable posture while also allowing for a fair amount of flex. Interestingly, there is also a display on the deck that shows ride-related stats.
Unlike the Chinese electric skateboards that flood many markets, the Defiant: One is handcrafted in the USA. But all of this means everyone is paying a considerable price.Single Defiant: A price tag of around $3,000 ¥250000. So while it might attract the envious glances of just about anyone on the street, it won’t be on most people’s shopping lists given its asking price.
