Electrek reports that the South Pasadena Police Department will be the first such agency in the U.S. to convert its entire fleet of police cars to electric vehicles. Also, interestingly, all the cars in its official fleet will be Tesla EVs. The report said the department was able to apply for a grant to acquire 10 Tesla Model Y crossovers. In addition, it continues to install DC fast chargers and nine Level 2 EV chargers to support its electric fleet.

According to reports, the police department realized that it could save a lot of money by using electric vehicles instead of fossil fuel-powered vehicles. South Pasadena City Council member Michael Cacciotti reportedly said Tesla electric vehicles are the safest and most efficient police vehicles on the market. “In addition to this, we will invest in technologies that help reduce harmful vehicle emissions to improve air quality for all of our residents,” he further added.

Interestingly, the South Pasadena Police Department is not the first to introduce electric vehicles as police vehicles. Several other police forces around the world have previously purchased electric vehicles from manufacturers such as Tesla as police vehicles. The report further noted that another police department in Somerset, Wisconsin, calculated that each Tesla Model Y crossover could save an impressive $80,000 in fuel and maintenance costs over a decade. Taking this fact into account, the Tesla Model 3 is cheaper and more efficient, resulting in higher savings.
