Toyota recently spotted an all-electric version of its popular Hilux pickup truck. Shown in concept form in Thailand, the Hilux Revo BEV concept was developed around the current generation of the internal combustion engine-powered Hilux pickup truck and was shown at an event celebrating the Japanese automaker’s 60th anniversary in the Southeast Asian country. While the concept EV clearly foreshadows the design of an electric pickup, no technical information has been revealed so far.

As a pure electric vehicle, the Hilux Revo BEV Concept has undergone a number of styling changes that make the concept stand out. The most notable changes include a closed front grille and a charging port on the passenger’s side of the dash. The headlights have a similar shape to the ICE-powered version of the pickup truck. They get LED units and LED daytime running lights. It also features blackened fog lamps and large alloy wheels.

At least part of the development of the electric Hilux was done in Thailand, the automaker revealed. However, it did not disclose any details about the production or launch plans of the EV. However, the Japanese car brand stressed that it is confident of achieving carbon neutrality with a range of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, pure electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda said at the event that pure electric vehicles are not the only way to achieve global carbon neutrality goals. He also said that to achieve carbon neutrality, one must remember that carbon is the real enemy, not a specific powertrain. “At Toyota, we believe in creating a complete portfolio of carbon-reducing options for our customers, including hybrid electric vehicles, plug-in electric vehicles, pure electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles. In addition, we are pursuing hydrogen like these GR Fuel Choice – Yaris and GR-Corolla Hydrogen Concept. As we work towards a sustainable future, I also believe we need to take a holistic approach to carbon neutrality,” Toyota further added.

Interestingly, Toyota has launched the Hilux pickup truck in India. The automaker is considering plans to bring electric vehicles to India in the near future. It’ll be interesting to see if the automaker brings an electric iteration of the pickup here.
