After unveiling the new Innova HyCross equipped with hybrid technology for the first time since its debut, Toyota is reportedly developing an electric version of the popular MPV abroad. In recent spy photos taken in Indonesia, a test mule with a closed grille has been spotted testing on the open road, hinting at an Innova EV in the near future.

Spy shots shared on social media show the Innova with a closed grille and headlight units highlighted in blue. The model is based on the older generation Innova Crysta. The spy shots also show the rear of the test mule, with the Innova EV badge on the vehicle’s C-pillar.

The spy shots also show that the front bumper of the Innova test mule also houses vertical fog light housings. It also gets new alloy wheels and blue graphics on the sides. The interior of the Innova EV is reported to be similar to the ICE version. It comes with a touchscreen infotainment system, a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel and an analog instrument cluster.

Toyota earlier showcased the Innova EV concept car at the Indonesia International Motor Show in April this year. The concept version has an infotainment screen that shows information like battery charge, usable range and power output. When presenting the Innova EV concept car, Toyota Astra Motor Indonesia said, “The concept car of Innova Electric was developed for research and development purposes and will be used in the future.”

Toyota currently sells the Innova globally with petrol or diesel engines. It recently launched a hybrid version of its popular MPV for global and Indian markets. An electric version will complete the Japanese brand’s entire package and may soon be the first MPV to offer nearly every powertrain, save hydrogen or compressed natural gas. However, the Innova with CNG kit is also expected to hit Indian shores soon.
