Toyota unveils innovative technology to improve electric vehicle range and performance


Toyota has unveiled a raft of technologies that will help improve the range, performance and cost of electric vehicles (EVs) the automaker plans to roll out in the second half of this decade. The company plans to achieve annual sales of 1.5 million electric vehicles by 2026. The innovation involves a new solid-state battery that will be used in the OEM’s future EV models.

Compared to the bZ4X EV, Toyota is now targeting a 20% increase in range and a 40% cost reduction.

The Japanese automaker’s new battery innovation promises higher energy density and shorter charging times than the lithium-ion batteries currently in use. With such a battery, the company believes it has achieved a “technological breakthrough” in overcoming problems previously associated with the durability of solid-state batteries. It plans to use these solid-state batteries in electric vehicles by 2027 or 2028.

In addition, the company says that by 2026, it will provide electric vehicles with batteries with higher energy density, a range of 1,000 kilometers on a single charge, a charging time of less than 20 minutes, and a 20% reduction in the cost of the company’s current electric vehicle, the bZ4X.

The company is now targeting a 20% increase in range and a 40% cost reduction compared to the bZ4X EV. It plans to further develop a series of lower-cost lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for use in 2026 or 2027.

In addition, in order to reduce the manufacturing cost of the next generation of electric vehicles, Toyota said it will use the Giga casting process pioneered by Tesla. This will help reduce manufacturing complexity and cost.

As far as range goes, Toyota said it is working with rocket designers at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to improve the aerodynamics of the EV and extend its range. The lower the drag coefficient (a measure of a car’s resistance to wind), the more efficiently the car will be on the road.
