One was booked after a video of him riding a motorcycle in Mumbai with his seven children went viral on social media.

The Mumbai Traffic Police has not yet revealed the identity of the accused. Police released a photo of the rider on the same motorcycle with a distorted face. The Mumbai traffic police said on social media: “This is not the way we support riding! This rider puts the lives of all backseat riders and others at risk. The accused rider has been registered as attempting to commit a crime that does not constitute murder.” Manslaughter, u/sec 308 IPC.”

Cycling without a helmet is the biggest killer on the streets of Maharashtra. Some 7,700 two-wheeler riders died last year, according to a recent report from the state’s Department of Transportation. The biggest cause of fatalities was riding without a helmet, the report said. With nearly 15,000 road fatalities recorded in the state in 2022, more than half of the victims were in two-wheelers, the report said.

Most of the victims involved in the two-wheelers suffered head injuries because they were not wearing helmets, reports said. It is an offense under the Motor Vehicles Act not to wear a helmet. Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act makes it an offense to ride a two-wheeler without a helmet. This rule applies to both the rider and the rear seat. Anyone who is not wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler can be fined up to Rs. 1,000. Passengers also risk having their licenses revoked or confiscated. In some cases, riders could be imprisoned for up to three months.
