Volkswagen is reportedly developing an all-electric version of the brand’s best-selling SUV, the Tiguan. A Handelsblatt report says the SUV is scheduled to be fully electric by 2025, with production scheduled for 2026. The German automaker took the decision at a worse council meeting, the report said. The decision is part of the brand’s strategy to electrify its entire range in the coming years.
Volkswagen ID card. The Tiguan, an all-electric version of the SUV, will be similar in style and size to existing combustion engine-powered models, the report said. The upcoming electric SUV will be based on the automaker’s updated MEB Plus architecture, which will also underpin the all-electric Volkswagen Golf. Details about this EV’s architecture are still under wraps, but it will feature new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic cells with charging speeds of up to 200 kW.

Speaking about plans to transform the Tiguan into an all-electric SUV, Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume hinted that customer demand for an all-electric Tiguan is as strong as it is for a Golf EV. “The Golf is an icon – a whole generation has been named after it. That’s why we also want to bring vehicles like the Golf and Tiguan into the electric age,” he added.
The German auto giant plans to sell only electric vehicles by 2033, and the Tiguan EV will be a key vehicle in that strategy. In addition to converting the Golf and Tiguan to pure electric models, the automaker is about to launch a production model of the ID.7, which will replace the Passat, and is reportedly developing an all-electric pickup truck for the U.S. market.
