The Volkswagen ID.4 is based on the automaker’s MEB platform, which underpins all of the German group’s ID range of electric vehicles, including the latest ID.7 EV. The ID.4 GTX is the top version with all-wheel drive. The electric crossover is equipped with an 82 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. That’s enough to run the ID.4 for nearly 500 kilometers before needing a recharge.

The electric motor inside the Volkswagen ID.4 is capable of producing up to 299 hp and a peak torque of 460 Nm. The ID.4 EV can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just over 6 seconds, while its top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h.

The design of the Volkswagen ID.4 is similar to the GTX version of the crossover, with several elements that make it look sportier than the standard version. The EV features GTX badging all around, a black roof, black spoiler and black air intakes. The LED headlights have a unique design. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt an X-shaped design.

The interior of the Volkswagen ID.4 is also quite high-end, with GTX elements scattered throughout the cabin. The dashboard is dominated by a large 12-inch digital touchscreen infotainment screen and a digital driver display.

Volkswagen has been testing the ID.4 electric crossover on Indian roads for some time now. The automaker has confirmed it will initially import a limited number of electric vehicles under rules allowing up to 2,500 vehicles without local certification. However, Volkswagen has also said that it is preparing to start locally assembling its electric vehicles in India within the next five years.

The Volkswagen ID.4 will be launched as a direct rival to the recently launched Kia EV6 crossover in India. Beyond that, it will take on other luxury EVs such as the Volvo XC40 Recharge, Audi e-tron, Mercedes-Benz EQC and Jaguar I-Pace.
