Elon Musk is a big believer in cars that can drive themselves. But Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak didn’t take the Tesla chief’s word too seriously, nor did he make an effort to reserve his opinion. Tesla’s AutoPilot system allows electric vehicles (EVs) to negotiate real-world conditions, even as the company always urges attention. But critics continue to express doubts about the machines’ ability to safely handle changing road conditions. –
Wozniak admitted in an interview with CNN earlier this month that he believes many of the things Tesla has claimed over the past few years. But as time passed, he cast doubt on the self-driving car claims. “I believe what he (Musk) said! By the end of 2016, a car will be autonomously crossing the country,” he said. “Oh, I had to upgrade to that model. You know, $50,000 and then it doesn’t do anything. I can tell it’s never going to catch on nationally.”
Wozniak further focused on the security side of it all. He reportedly said: “Gosh, if you want to do wrong research on artificial intelligence and make a lot of claims and try to kill you as much as possible, buy a Tesla.”
Tesla and Musk continue to insist that the AutoPilot system is comprehensive, even as the company made questionable headlines after several fatal accidents were linked to the self-driving technology. The U.S. regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is reportedly investigating two such incidents. Tesla did roll out an update to Full Self-Driving, or FSD, recently, but Full Self-Driving still requires a safety clearance in most parts of the world.
