Your own electric car? Beware cyberattacks on EV charging stations, says Gadkari

Electric vehicle charging stations are also as vulnerable to cyberattacks and cybersecurity incidents as any other technology application, parliament was told on Thursday. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-In), which tracks and monitors cybersecurity incidents in India, has received reports of vulnerabilities in products and applications related to electric vehicle charging stations.

“The government is fully aware and aware of various cyber security threats and is actively taking steps to combat the hacking problem,” Gadkari said.

He said that based on information reported and tracked by CERT-In, the number of cybersecurity incidents in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 is 2,08,456; 3,94,499; 11,58,208; 14, 02,809 and 13,91,457.

Responding to a separate query, the Road Transport and Highways Minister said ¥Compensation of Rs 147 crore has been paid out to victims of hit and run cases in the financial year ended February.

The ministry has notified the 2022 Compensation Scheme for Victims of Hit-and-Run Auto Accidents.

It provides for increased compensation for victims of hit-and-run accidents, ¥50,000 (in case of serious injury) and ¥2,00,000 (in case of death) including detailed procedures for using this compensation.

Responding to another question, Gadkari said the ministry had set a national road construction target of 12,200 km in the current fiscal year as compared to the previous three fiscal years.

“The target for NHs construction in the 2023-24 financial year has not yet been finalized,” he added.

Minister informs there are 19 project costs ¥218.64 billion was delayed due to land acquisition delays.
